earthquake that took place in that month so injured the building that it had to be vacated and the school is now being carried on with some difficulty in temporary premises.

to amalgamate these two schools, and application was made to the Government last year for an area of land in the vicinity
of Inland Lot 1096 on which it would be possible to erect
a building sufficiently large to accommodate both schools, and a boarding house and quarters for mistresses. Sir Henry May considered that it was a case in which the Govern- -ment should help and he expressed himself in favour of granting the site coloured red on the enclosed plan, contain -ing about 29,462 square feet. This land is situated in what is known as West End Park, one of the areas appropriat- -ed for the purpose of public recreation under Ordinance No. 35 of 1909, and before it can be granted to the Church Missionary Society it will be necessary to publish a notification under Section 2(1) of that Ordinance to the effect that it appears to the Governor desirable in the interest of the Government of the Colony that the portion of the West End Park referred to should be re-appropriated, and that it should be used for other purposes.
4. I find myself in agreement with Sir Henry
May in this matter. The two schools in question are doing
and work of a high educational value in the best sense, relieve the Goverment of the necessity of providing schools of its own. The need for erecting buildings on a new site has arisen owing to the resumption by the Govern- -ment of the site of one of the schools in the interest of the University and the removal of the other school owing to the earthquake. It is also very desirable that the new buildings should be erected as soon as possible in order that the work of the schools may be carried on with the same efficiency as hitherto.
